Types of Wine Glasses

By David Beart

The type of wine glass that you serve your wine in can have a dramatic impact on the flavor and quality of the wine. There are many factors associated with wine glasses that may add or subtract from the wine’s flavor, appearance and quality. There are also some glassware basics that should be considered when choosing glasses.

For a home wine-connoisseur, you may need to take your wine glass selection very seriously. For those individuals that enjoy a variety of different types of wine, you may opt for an all-purpose wine glass. These are tulip shaped and hold approximately 8 to 12 ounces and are appropriate for most types of wine. There are, however, specific types of glasses that you may be interested in purchasing if you enjoy a particular type of wine on a regular basis. You do not necessarily need a special glass for each type of wine, but if you routinely enjoy a particular wine and you have the storage and budget, then you may be interested.

So what are the differences in white and red wine glasses? There are several differences and each affect the bouquet of the wine as well as help to maintain the appropriate temperature of the wine. And of course, white wines are best served out of glasses designed for white wines and red wines are best served out of glasses designed for red wines.

The white wine glass has a narrow mouth, which allows the wine to maintain its chilled temperature. The reduced surface area of the glass does not allow air to permeate the wine as much as it does in a wide mouthed red wine glass. The reduced amount of air means that the air will not warm the wine. The smaller bowl of the glass also means that there is less contact by the heat of the hand, which can also warm the wine.

Chardonnay glasses feature a narrow rim of glass that helps to direct the wine to the middle of the palate. This applies the fruit flavors and acidity. The longer bowl of the glass keeps the wine chilled and captures the aromas of the wine. This type of glass works well for Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis, White Bordeaux and Burgundies, White Pinots and Viognier.

Sangiovese and Riesling glass feature a smaller bowl and even narrower rim. The smaller bowl is due to the fact that these wines are usually consumed in smaller quantities as dessert wines. The smaller and elongated bowl also allows the wine to stay chilled while you are enjoying your dessert. These glasses are also great for wines that are sweet and may be drunk in smaller amounts. This type of glass is also appropriate for Bardolino, Chianti, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano and Zinfandel. If you frequently enjoy white wines, you may enjoy an all-purpose glass that is designed for different white wines.

Red wine glasses are usually noted as having a large bowl and wide mouth. These glasses are similar to the Bordeaux and Burgundy wine glass. The Bordeaux wine glass is designed specifically for these red wines. They have a large and round bowl, which allows the wine to breathe, which brings out the different aromas that the wine has to offer. Allowing the red wine to sit in the glass will have a similar effect that decanting has on a wine. These glasses are tall and shoot the wine straight to the back of your mouth where most red wines will react with the back of the palate.

The Burgundy glass is also a good wine glass that is appropriate for reds and full-bodied wines. They have an even larger bowl than the Bordeaux glass and focuses the wine to be absorbed at the tip of your tongue. This allows the drinker to enjoy the sweetness of this wine. This glass is also appropriate for your Pinot Noir wines and is best for gathering the delicate bouquet of your red wine.

Red wine glasses also allow you to drink your red wines at room temperature. The larger bowl is designed to allow the wine to cool after it is exposed to the heat of your hand. If you enjoy red wine on a regular basis, you may be interested in buying a set of these glasses.

When purchasing wine glasses, you will want to look for clean and clear glasses. This will allow you to examine the wine and check its clarity and color. A clean glass is absolutely necessary for enjoying wines and after washing you will want to remove any soap residue that is left on the glass. Thin glasses are also the best, as a rolled rim will cause the wine to dribble into your mouth while a thin glass presents less obstruction between you and the wine. Stems are also necessary, as you do not want to hold the bowl of the glass. The glass should also have a tapered rim, which will keep the wine from spilling when you swirl. It will also help to capture the aroma of the wine.

Choosing The Right Wine Goblets

By David Cowley

Whether as a gift to someone else or as a gift to yourself, wine goblets can be a beautiful addition to any bar set. For those who are true wine lovers, these beautiful glasses can even add to the enjoyment of a good wine as a nicely cut piece of glass can catch the light and make it dance off the wine itself. But if you’re shopping for wine goblets you may notice that there are several different types of goblets and wine glasses; since no one wants to commit a faux pas and drink wine from the wrong glass, how can you be sure you’re making the right choice?

First, keep in mind that wine goblets are often smaller than water goblets or glasses. If you’re looking at complementary glasses on a table the goblets used for wine will be the smaller of the two. Remembering this will cut down on those embarrassing mistakes of filling the wrong glass with the wrong beverage!

Once you realize which is the proper glass, then choosing the pattern, design, and even material is just a matter of personal taste. Most restaurants will have mass produced, plain glasses for the wine, but for your own home you may want to invest a bit of money in a design for wine goblets that you really like and that really go well with your dishes and table setting. Cut crystal is a beautiful choice as the crystal is one of the best reflectors of light, and a beautiful design can really help the light dance around the glass and the wine itself. Crystal is still a very popular option when it comes to glasses of any style and is valued for its looks and its durability as well. But if you want something very unique, you can find goblets of virtually any material and design.

For example, many centuries ago before glass was a popular option, wine goblets were made of a pottery material or of wood. Since there were no automated machines at that time these items were made by hand. When silver and pewter became popular materials then all eating utensils began to be shaped from these; silversmiths realized that they could treat the silver as an artist’s canvas and hand carve designs right into the cups themselves.

Today you can still purchase handmade and unique items. While wood is not the most popular option, silver or pewter goblets can be a beautiful addition to any table. They also make beautiful wedding gifts! Many designs also have a crystal cup wrapped in a silver or pewter base or foot, which is a beautiful combination of materials. You can also get glass wine goblets of various colors, and cobalt blue is a favorite choice for many.

The internet has become a great place to start your search for your goblets. Not only will you find great bargains but also you will be able to see pictures of the different types of materials use and designs available. You can find some very inexpensive varieties or if you entertain at home a lot perhaps the more expensive varieties will be of more to your taste. Once you realize what a wide variety of options you have for wine goblets then your biggest problem may be just choosing which one you love best!

The Medicinal Qualities Of Wine

By John Gygax

From long before the birth of Christ the medicinal qualities of wine have been appreciated. The Ancient Greeks used wine as a medium for the essences of herbs or spices known, or thought, to contain ingredients that relieved pain or sickness. The bitterness or unpleasant flavour of the medicine was masked by the wine and thus became more acceptable to the patient. This practice continued throughout the centuries. Indeed in most countries one can still buy wines containing health promoting additives. Usually described as tonic wines, they are frequently taken by the chronic invalid or the convalescent, as well as by the hypochondriac.

Antiseptic

The antiseptic quality of wine has long been known. It was common practice to wash wounds in wine before binding them, and it was accepted that this helped the healing process. It was not known of course that the acid and alcohol killed bacteria, because bacteria were not recognised as the cause of infection until the middle of the 19th century.

Anaesthetic

The anaesthetic qualities of wine and spirits were also known. Before an operation the patient would be made quite drunk so that the pain of amputating a limb, for example, could be endured. The blood pressure was lowered, too, although this advantage may not have been appreciated.

Healing

The beneficial qualities of various flower, vegetable and other wines may not yet be fully understood. It was once believed that celery wine was helpful to people suffering from rheumatism. Fig wine was thought to be good for people afflicted with chronic constipation. Elderberry wine is still considered helpful for those suffering from a cold or cough. Dandelion wine was supposed to be helpful to those suffering from a disorder of the bladder – and so on. Scientists may yet find that these old tales are not complete nonsense.

Tonic & Relaxing

Today, wine is widely regarded as a tonic, in the form of an aperitif, for the jaded appetite. It is also considered to be an aid to digestion. It is known that wine can relieve tensions and relax taut nerves. It reduces inhibitions and ensures sociability. Whilst beer and spirits are frequently forbidden to the obese or the sick, wine is only excluded during a fever. It is often prescribed during convalescence. Even the diabetic, for whom sweet food and drink can be a positive danger, is not forbidden a glass of dry wine.

Because wine stimulates sociability, it is not usually associated with alcoholism, a disease of the lonely or troubled who more often turn to spirits for relief.

How Much

Recent American research has reported that moderate consumption of alcohol – around half a bottle a day – leads to a longer, healthier life than that enjoyed both by those who drink none and by those who drink much more. Like many other matters, this is something that mankind has really been aware of for generations without being able to prove it in statistical terms!

Reveal the Mystery

There is no harm in giving a sip of wine even to babies, and there is much to be said for allowing young children a small glass of wine diluted with water. Because no prohibitions are made there are no secrets for the child to discover by surreptitious drinking. A glass or so at a meal for the young adolescent does no harm, improves the sense of belonging to the world of adults and is a step on the path of sophistication. The important advice to young people is the same as it is for ourselves – moderation. Amateur winemakers, usually with a substantial stock of wine available to them, tend to be moderate social drinkers. Whilst at parties they may drink their fill, it is extremely rare to see one ‘under the weather’.

Aphrodisiac

Some wines are said to have aphrodisiac qualities. Around the year AD 200 it was recorded by Atheneus ‘that wine from Heraea (a town in Greece) drives men out of their senses and makes women inclined to pregnancy/ Mead too has long been thought to be something of a sexual stimulant. The probability is more likely that the moderate and regular drinking of wine or mead helps to keep one well, dynamic and full of vitality. When the wine or mead is shared with an appropriate partner, tension is relaxed and inhibitions depart. There is no evidence that wine or mead directly stimulates the sexual senses.

Comfort

Elderly people benefit from a glass of wine taken regularly. It not only comforts them but has a warming effect at a time in life when they begin to feel the cold more than ever before.

There can be no doubt that in moderation wine is beneficial and health promoting to people of all ages, from the cradle to the grave. Those of us who have wine in abundance should be thankful for such a blessing when so many are under-nourished. Thanks be to God. Amen.

How To Enjoy A Glass Of Wine

By Caroline Silverstone

There are a million and one ways to enjoy a glass of wine. Situations from congratulatory to conciliatory to comforting all call for a little wine. However, there are moments in life that are made for certain types of wine. It is important to know the ABC’s of how to enjoy a glass of wine, so you can savor it at its best whenever you choose to.

The Right Choice

Strategically choose the type of wine for the feeling, mood and circumstances of the moment. Obviously champagne and sparkling wines are best suited to celebrations and happy times. Light wines like Rieslings are wonderful when it is hot outside or you are just looking for something fresh and lively. Reds tend to be more romantic and some of them are even just perfect for sitting beside the fire on a cold winter night. Whites like Sauvignon Blanc are elegant and a great choice for a more formal feel. However, what makes the right choice the best choice is you. Guidelines are helpful, but by keeping a wine diary tracking likes, dislikes, food pairings and the setting you enjoyed them in, you can be sure to make the best choice for you and your wine moments in life.

The Right Temperature

Be sure that the wines you serve yourself and others are served at the temperature that best shows off their qualities. Sparkling wines and champagnes must be served cold, as should white wine. Red wines and dessert wines are much better at room temperature – providing your rooms are a moderate temperature, neither freezing nor hot. The right temperature for the wine enhances the aroma of it, which is one of the major components in your wine enjoyment.

The Right Accessories

Nothing dulls the moment of enjoying a nice glass of wine as much as struggling with a difficult to use wine opener or swirling your wine in a cloudy water-spotted wineglass. You must have the right accessories to accentuate your enjoyment. Personally I love the wine opener I have. It is a two-motion screw pull type of opener that is virtually impossible to mess up. After years of brutalizing corks, they now come out effortlessly every time. Hand washing in hot water and drying with a lint-free cloth will ensure sparkling glasses to enjoy your wines from. For an even heightened experience, experiment with tasting your favorite white from a white wineglass versus a regular wineglass. You may just be surprised at the difference the glass itself makes.

The Right Food

Choose your wine based on the food you are planning to enjoy with it. Be cautious to balance them carefully. An overpowering wine will diminish the enjoyment you get from light meals and even mask the taste of certain foods. The opposite is also true; wines that are not hearty enough for heavier meals will be practically eliminated by the taste of the food. Strive for balance to enhance the taste of the wine and your meal together.

These simple tips will make your wine experience an easier, better tasting one. By keeping these points in mind, you will surely heighten your enjoyment of any glass of wine.
