Health Benefits of Wine

By Tim Sousa

You may enjoy an occasional glass of wine. It is used on many festive occasions to raise a toast, or to enhance a fine meal. But are you aware that wine can also be beneficial to your health? It’s true. Medical studies have shown that an occasional glass of wine can be beneficial to your health.

You may or may not have heard about the ‘French Paradox’. This finding shows that the French have a lower incidence of coronary disease as we find in the United States, despite the rich, high fat foods found in French cuisine. Many experts attribute this to the regular consmption of wine in the French diet.

Some medical studies have shown that an occasional glass of wine can reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke. Moderate wine consumption can reduce the risk of death by cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cancer. Other diseases may also be reduced by moderate wine consumption, and may very well increase one’s life expectancy.

Studies are still being conducted on the health benefits of a glass of wine. Wine contains flavanoids, anti-oxidants that help to prevent free-radicals from damaging cells. One in particular helps to prevent hardening of the arteries. Wine also contains a substance called reservetrol. This substance has been shown to boost the immune system, block cancer, and protect against cardiovascular diseases.

These substances are found in all wine, but there are more in red wine than in white wine. The reservatrol and flavanoids are present in the grape skins and stems. When white wine is made, the grapes are pressed, and the juice is removed and fermented to make the wine. With red wines, the grapes are pressed, and the juice sits for a while with the grape skins and stems still present. Because of this, the grape juice has a chance to leach more of the flavanoids and reservatrol from the grape skins. So, red wines will have a higher concentration of anti-oxidants than white.

The alcohol content present in wine can have some benefits as well. Moderate consumption of alcohol can raise the level of HDL, or good cholesterol, and thin out the blood. Keep in mind, this is moderate consumption of alcohol, not heavy consumption. So this isn’t an excuse to go out and get drunk.

So, what does this mean for you?

If you consume a glass or two of red wine a day, it can help to reduce your risk of coronary disease and cancer, and increase your lifespan. Keep in mind though, that there are some instances in which you should not drink wine, or any other alcoholic beverage. You may have certain medical conditions that may be made worse by alcohol. Certain medications, as well, should not be taken with alcohol. So, while wine may be beneficial, there are also circumstances in which it can be harmful, so consult your doctor first.

So, if you can have wine, go ahead and pour yourself a glass and enjoy. Wine will not only enhance your meal, but it can also improve your health, and help you to live a longer life. Enjoy!

Red Wine And The Aging Process

By Connie Limon

Recent research suggests that aging as we know it may not be inevitable. We know that some animals do not seem to age such as many cold-water ocean fish, some amphibians and the American lobster continue to grow bigger, are able to reproduce and to live until something kills them. Some people believe that because of the animals that do not seem to age that it could be something in their genes, and possibly in our genes, that controls the pace of aging, and that aging is not the fate of every living thing.

Scientists have discovered that when animals are forced to live on 30 to 40 percent fewer calories than they would normally eat, they become resistant to most age-related diseases that include:

•Cancer

•Heart disease

•Diabetes

•Alzheimers

And they also live 30 to 50 percent longer. Judging from the animal studies, calorie restriction slows aging.

How this is, noone knows for sure, nor why aging occurs and what are the underlying genes that preserve vitality and stave off disease.

Few of us humans are capable of restricting our diets by 30 to 40 percent without being constantly hungry. So some scientists began to look for ways to trigger the sirtuin system in action without restricting calories. In 2003, a handful of sirtuin-activating compounds were discovered. Resveratrol – a molecule produced in plants such as red-wine grapes was the most potent.

Resveratrol and other STACs have enhanced the vitality and extended the life span of every species they have been fed to such as:

•Yeast

•Fruit flies

•Worms

•Fish

The maximum life span of the fish increased 59 percent, which is equivalent to a human living to 194 years. These results are remarkable; however, it is unclear if resveratrol works in the same manner in warm-blooded furry animals.

In studies with mice it was found that resveratrol:

•Reduced the risk of death by 30 percent

•The mice treated with resveratrol were leaner and developed a greatly enhanced aerobic capacity

•Their muscles were consuming oxygen more efficiently

•Had greater capacity to generate energy

•The mice could run twice as far without getting tired

•At least for mice, resveratrol was found to be an outstanding performance-enhancing drug

Evidence also indicates that resveratrol may protect against aging-related diseases. In studies around the world, resveratrol protected mice against:

•Heart disease

•Cancer

•Diabetes

•Alzheimer’s disease

These are the very diseases that reduce most people’s life span. The question of what this all means for humans is still unanswered, yet, could be just as beneficial. Things that are true in mice are often, but not always, true in humans.

Researchers plan many more studies in both animals and in humans in 2007. Some of the first human studies of resveratrol will tell us whether it can help people with either type 2 diabetes or a rare condition called MELAS syndrome that causes brain and muscle destruction in children.

Other good news is that research has started now to find sirtuin activators that have the same effects as resveratrol, but are more potent.

Resveratrol is found in red wine and because of this some people are asking whether they should drink more red wine, or drink red wine to the exclusion of other alcoholic beverages. I personally tried drinking a 6 ounce glass of red wine each night before I went to bed, and felt quite horrible the next day. I do not drink alcohol at all, but was trying this for myself because of all the news I read about the heart health benefits in red wine. I have abandoned the red wine for 10 fluid ounces of 100% grape juice. Most scientific researchers tell us there is not enough resveratrol in red wine to make it a good idea to start drinking it for our health.

Resveratrol tablets and capsules are also available over the counter, but they are of no “proven” value in humans, and they are not manufactured and controlled by the Food and Drug Administration.

Animals that have been given resveratrol treatment are remarkably vital until the end. The studies in animals seem promising. In the future we may be taking resveratrol supplements right along with our daily multivitamins. As of today, however, according to scientific proof, it is still better not to start drinking red wine if you are a non-alcoholic drinker to begin with in the hopes of prolonging your life or having better health. We are probably still safer drinking our 100% grape juice until further studies prove resveratrol in red wine is worth drinking an alcoholic beverage.

Best Red Wine And Red Wine Benefits

By Mark Robert

Red wine is simply wine produced from red (or black) grapes. What you might not know is that almost all grapes have colorless juice. The way that the red wine gets its color is by letting the skins soak in the juice until the red color bleeds out.

Tannin

Not only does soaking the skins give red wine its color, it also imparts a substance known as tannin. Tannin is what gives red wines a complexity that is beyond that of most white wines.

Do you know why red wines age better than white?

It is the tannin which gives the smell of wine in your mouth. Over time, the qualities of the tannin will mellow and blend harmoniously with the other characteristics of the wine. This is one of the main reasons that red wines usually age better than whites.

Benefits – Anti-Oxidants in wine

Red Wine contains Anti-Oxidants which is good for health. Drinking red wine can improve heart health and circulation while also preventing cancer. This site is for those looking for information, articles and news on red wine and health.

Aging Process

Red wines are most often aged in wood barrels to provide a deeper, richer flavor, sometimes described as woody, while white wines are not stored in wood to maintain their usually cleaner, clear taste. There are also guidelines on the types of wine to drink with different types of food, but many find the guidelines are not all encompassing.

Types of Best Red wines

Merlot

Merlot is one of the finest vintages of red wine and also one of the most popular. The higher alcohol content of merlot makes it an especial favorite among restaurateurs with an affinity for gourmet fare. Merlot has a rich and full-bodied flavor.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most common red wine that you will find most commonly in homes across America. This rich, full-flavored beverage goes well with most any dish other than fish or seafood.

Zinfandel

The Zinfandel varieties of red wine are most often classified as ladies wine, due to their subtle and light flavor. Zinfandel can be found in both red and white varieties, it is the red which is most popular among wine drinkers who appreciate the richness of a red wine, but the subtlety of white.

What foods go fine with red wine?

For the most part, guidelines say that red wine should be consumed with red meats and white wines with white meat. However, with the different flavors of the different types of wine, people are finding that some red wines taste better with fish and some white wines go better with their beef. Essentially, it is a matter of individual taste that determines the flavor of the wine, regardless of the meal.

Do you know that not all wines are made of grapes!

Not all wines are made of grapes, and these types of wine are usually indicated by their name such as apple wine or elderberry wine. There is also several types of wine that are made from grains such as rice, but they usually have a closer resemblance to beer instead of the smoother taste of wine. There is even wine made from grapes that have been frozen on the vine known as ice wine that offers a crisper taste.
