Types of Wine Glasses

By David Beart

The type of wine glass that you serve your wine in can have a dramatic impact on the flavor and quality of the wine. There are many factors associated with wine glasses that may add or subtract from the wine’s flavor, appearance and quality. There are also some glassware basics that should be considered when choosing glasses.

For a home wine-connoisseur, you may need to take your wine glass selection very seriously. For those individuals that enjoy a variety of different types of wine, you may opt for an all-purpose wine glass. These are tulip shaped and hold approximately 8 to 12 ounces and are appropriate for most types of wine. There are, however, specific types of glasses that you may be interested in purchasing if you enjoy a particular type of wine on a regular basis. You do not necessarily need a special glass for each type of wine, but if you routinely enjoy a particular wine and you have the storage and budget, then you may be interested.

So what are the differences in white and red wine glasses? There are several differences and each affect the bouquet of the wine as well as help to maintain the appropriate temperature of the wine. And of course, white wines are best served out of glasses designed for white wines and red wines are best served out of glasses designed for red wines.

The white wine glass has a narrow mouth, which allows the wine to maintain its chilled temperature. The reduced surface area of the glass does not allow air to permeate the wine as much as it does in a wide mouthed red wine glass. The reduced amount of air means that the air will not warm the wine. The smaller bowl of the glass also means that there is less contact by the heat of the hand, which can also warm the wine.

Chardonnay glasses feature a narrow rim of glass that helps to direct the wine to the middle of the palate. This applies the fruit flavors and acidity. The longer bowl of the glass keeps the wine chilled and captures the aromas of the wine. This type of glass works well for Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis, White Bordeaux and Burgundies, White Pinots and Viognier.

Sangiovese and Riesling glass feature a smaller bowl and even narrower rim. The smaller bowl is due to the fact that these wines are usually consumed in smaller quantities as dessert wines. The smaller and elongated bowl also allows the wine to stay chilled while you are enjoying your dessert. These glasses are also great for wines that are sweet and may be drunk in smaller amounts. This type of glass is also appropriate for Bardolino, Chianti, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano and Zinfandel. If you frequently enjoy white wines, you may enjoy an all-purpose glass that is designed for different white wines.

Red wine glasses are usually noted as having a large bowl and wide mouth. These glasses are similar to the Bordeaux and Burgundy wine glass. The Bordeaux wine glass is designed specifically for these red wines. They have a large and round bowl, which allows the wine to breathe, which brings out the different aromas that the wine has to offer. Allowing the red wine to sit in the glass will have a similar effect that decanting has on a wine. These glasses are tall and shoot the wine straight to the back of your mouth where most red wines will react with the back of the palate.

The Burgundy glass is also a good wine glass that is appropriate for reds and full-bodied wines. They have an even larger bowl than the Bordeaux glass and focuses the wine to be absorbed at the tip of your tongue. This allows the drinker to enjoy the sweetness of this wine. This glass is also appropriate for your Pinot Noir wines and is best for gathering the delicate bouquet of your red wine.

Red wine glasses also allow you to drink your red wines at room temperature. The larger bowl is designed to allow the wine to cool after it is exposed to the heat of your hand. If you enjoy red wine on a regular basis, you may be interested in buying a set of these glasses.

When purchasing wine glasses, you will want to look for clean and clear glasses. This will allow you to examine the wine and check its clarity and color. A clean glass is absolutely necessary for enjoying wines and after washing you will want to remove any soap residue that is left on the glass. Thin glasses are also the best, as a rolled rim will cause the wine to dribble into your mouth while a thin glass presents less obstruction between you and the wine. Stems are also necessary, as you do not want to hold the bowl of the glass. The glass should also have a tapered rim, which will keep the wine from spilling when you swirl. It will also help to capture the aroma of the wine.

How To Enjoy A Glass Of Wine

By Caroline Silverstone

There are a million and one ways to enjoy a glass of wine. Situations from congratulatory to conciliatory to comforting all call for a little wine. However, there are moments in life that are made for certain types of wine. It is important to know the ABC’s of how to enjoy a glass of wine, so you can savor it at its best whenever you choose to.

The Right Choice

Strategically choose the type of wine for the feeling, mood and circumstances of the moment. Obviously champagne and sparkling wines are best suited to celebrations and happy times. Light wines like Rieslings are wonderful when it is hot outside or you are just looking for something fresh and lively. Reds tend to be more romantic and some of them are even just perfect for sitting beside the fire on a cold winter night. Whites like Sauvignon Blanc are elegant and a great choice for a more formal feel. However, what makes the right choice the best choice is you. Guidelines are helpful, but by keeping a wine diary tracking likes, dislikes, food pairings and the setting you enjoyed them in, you can be sure to make the best choice for you and your wine moments in life.

The Right Temperature

Be sure that the wines you serve yourself and others are served at the temperature that best shows off their qualities. Sparkling wines and champagnes must be served cold, as should white wine. Red wines and dessert wines are much better at room temperature – providing your rooms are a moderate temperature, neither freezing nor hot. The right temperature for the wine enhances the aroma of it, which is one of the major components in your wine enjoyment.

The Right Accessories

Nothing dulls the moment of enjoying a nice glass of wine as much as struggling with a difficult to use wine opener or swirling your wine in a cloudy water-spotted wineglass. You must have the right accessories to accentuate your enjoyment. Personally I love the wine opener I have. It is a two-motion screw pull type of opener that is virtually impossible to mess up. After years of brutalizing corks, they now come out effortlessly every time. Hand washing in hot water and drying with a lint-free cloth will ensure sparkling glasses to enjoy your wines from. For an even heightened experience, experiment with tasting your favorite white from a white wineglass versus a regular wineglass. You may just be surprised at the difference the glass itself makes.

The Right Food

Choose your wine based on the food you are planning to enjoy with it. Be cautious to balance them carefully. An overpowering wine will diminish the enjoyment you get from light meals and even mask the taste of certain foods. The opposite is also true; wines that are not hearty enough for heavier meals will be practically eliminated by the taste of the food. Strive for balance to enhance the taste of the wine and your meal together.

These simple tips will make your wine experience an easier, better tasting one. By keeping these points in mind, you will surely heighten your enjoyment of any glass of wine.

What Is A Perfect Wine Refrigerator

By Ken Glauser

If you compare your home refrigerator and a wine refrigerator, some differences will become apparent. A food refrigereator is kept well below 50 degrees fahrenheit, much too cold for a wine refrigerator. Wine should be stored at around 55 degrees. Another difference between the two refrigerators is the the one for food is opened multiple times during a day. Opening a wine refrigerator that many times would make it very hard for the refrigerator to maintaing the correct temperature.

The Size of a Wine Refrigerator

You may wonder which size of wine refrigerator to choose. There are a number of models and choices. Some wine refrigerators hold 6 bottles while other models hold 20 or more bottles. The six bottle units sit nicely of your counter top while you will need some floor space for the bigger models. One of the advantages of the bigger wine refrigerators is the individual cooling compartments. This allows you to put red, white or rose in the wine refrigerator and each type of wine will have its own section.

What Temperature Should I Store My Wine?

Storage of wine can be critical to the final product in your glass. Too warm and the wine will age to fast but too cold is just as harmful as the colder temperatures don’t allow the natural aging process to continue. Different wines have different temperature tolerances. If you are a fan of blush, rose or dry white wines or even light red wines, then that dial for temperature should be set to between 40 and 52 degrees. Don’t put your champagne or other sparkling wines in the wine refrigerator. The temperature for full-bodied wine should be stored at temperatures in the 52 to 60 degree range. These temperatures in your wine refrigerators makes for a much better end product.

The Difference between a Wine Cellar and a Wine Refrigerator

Basically the difference relates to the amount of wine that can be stored. Obviously the wine cellar will hold more bottles and is much more expensive since it usually takes up one or more rooms in your house. These rooms are usually in a basement that gets litte light and essentially acts like a big refrigerator with different “temperature zones” for different wines that you’re storing. While the idea of a wine cellar may be very attractive to the wine enthusiast, they had better have deep pockets. They are quite a bit more expensive than even the best wine refrigerator.

Where to Purchase a Wine Refrigerator

Purchasing a wine refrigerator can seem like a daunting task but it really need not be that hard. There are several places you can purchase them. Online, you may want to check out a specific manufacturers web site. Offline you can go to home improvement stores or appliance dealers. Just be sure to compare prices when you decide you want a good wine refrigerator. Learn about the different models and their features. That way you won’t be talked into a model that you either can’t afford or one that has features that you don’t need. You will see and taste the benefit of a good wine refrigerator in your glass.

How To Store And Care For Wine

By Rayray7

Wine consumption has become more and more popular over the years. With so much money going into wine both as an investment and for later consumption, the history of the wine will always be in question. Bearing this in mind, many people often wonder how they can expertly store their wine and take care of it at the same time.

The way you store your wine is very important. Wine stored properly can lead to euphoria, while storing it wrong can lead to depression. When you open and taste a bottle of wine that has properly been stored, it can be illustrious indeed, while tasting a bottle of poorly stored wine can be quite the letdown. Many times, drinking a bottle of wine that was poorly stored is just like drinking vinegar.

To properly store wine, several factors need to be present, such as temperature, humidity, lighting, the cleanliness of your storage area, the angle of the bottle while it is stored, and the vibration of the bottle on the rack. The ideal temperature is the most important, as you should keep it around 50 degrees at all times. The lower temperature can help to age the wine. Make sure any fluctuation in the temperature happens slowly.

The humidity level for storing wine should be around 70%, although it is okay to keep it 10% above or below the 70% level. When you have too high of a humidity temperature, the labels can easily rot, which can definitely affect the wine’s value. While if the humidity gets too low, around 50%, the cork could shrink and bring air into the wine, which would ruin it.

The angle that wine is stored is very important as well. It is very important to let the wine come in contact with the cork because that would prevent the cork from drying out which can cause air to sip into the wine. Try to keep the wine out of direct light, as light can ruin any type of wine. Light creates premature aging of the wine. Your best bet is to store wine in a dark location.

Preventing damage to the wine from sediment requires you to store wine in a location that is free of vibration. If you store wine in places that have no vibration, it will give the sediment in the bottle much time to settle. Vibrations can never be a good thing for wine, as the sediment becomes misplaced and can ruin the wine or shake it to the point where it tastes bad.

To preserve the quality and increase the value of your wine, storage and care is very important. Storing it in a proper location can also bring the best taste. Among wine enthusiast, nothing is more disappointing than waiting several years to open a bottle of fine wine, only to find that it is nothing but vinegar.

A good way to prevent this from happening is to take better care of your wine. To care for wine properly is not difficult it just takes the right conditions and location. Storage and care is so very important these days because everyone loves a fine wine.
