Broadening the Wine Spectrum

By Caroline Silverstone

Every so often, even us wine lovers tend to get tired of drinking the same thing time after time. Even if we like to experiment, sometimes we get stuck in a rut of buying the same type of wine from the same regions or even only buying a few bottles that we know we like.

It’s easy to keep things the same and avoid change. When we get to thinking about it, we often wonder why we don’t experiment more. Here are some tips to make it easier to get back into the swing of wine variety.

Go To a Wine Tasting

A great way to widen your repertoire of wines is by attending wine-tasting events. These events are often hosted in someone’s home, in a wine store or at a wine bar. By trying a variety of wines and keeping a careful record of what you’ve tasted and what you’ve enjoyed, you’ll be able to quickly and efficiently find new wines that you like and that fit your budget. An online search will provide you with a listing of local wine events.

Start with Something Simple

Choose to try something that is similar to a type of wine you already like. If you love dry reds, switching to a sweet white may not be the best bet. If you enjoy Merlot from the Napa Valley and the Pays d’Oc regions, you might do well by trying some Australian Merlots, one from Washington State or a Chilean Merlot.

If you like practically all Merlots, a Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, red Zinfandel or Beaujolais may be good choices for branching out. If you enjoy light sweet white wines like Riesling, you may want to try some blush wines or white Zinfandel. Many of the unusually named German wines may also be enjoyable for you.

Try Something New in a Restaurant

Next time you are enjoying a meal out, instead of getting a glass of something that you usually drink, order something different. You can get just a glass to see if you like it or not. To avoid getting stuck with a house wine that is barely drinkable or something that was opened days ago, ask for whatever was opened most recently.

Research Wine

Read up on the wines you like and wine in general. By knowing a little about the type of wine you like, you will be better equipped to find something with similar properties that you will probably also like. If you research wine online you can also find exactly what you are looking for. You can search within a price range, within types of wine, wine regions and more. You can work your way through a best-of list or buy only wines that come highly recommended.

No matter what your technique for widening the variety of wines that you enjoy, you will have some hits and some misses. Keep on trying and you’ll find that you can easily build a wide selection of wines that you enjoy. Keep a wine journal, so when you are looking for a sure bet that you don’t often drink, you’ll have your own personal best-of on hand.

How To Remove Red Wine From Carpet

By Niv Orlian

The red wine spill is something that most homeowners fear the most. There you are enjoying a nice glass of delicious red wine when it falls out of your hand or sloshes over the side of your glass and onto your carpet or light colored sofa. Before you start to panic, you should know that a red wine stain does not mean the end of your furniture or carpets. There a few easy steps that can be taken to get that carpet looking new again. It is more than possible to clean red wine from carpet.

Your carpets should be cleaned by a professional at least once a year. A homeowner should also take a few steps to clean up any spots that appear on a weekly basis. Before you buy a commercial cleaner you should always try the less toxic do it yourself solutions that you can make at home.

As with any spill a red wine carpet stain should be work on the minute that it hits your carpet. If you wait a long time before attempting to clean the spots, they will be almost impossible to remove at a later time.

Using a wet cloth, you will need to pat the area so that the wine can be absorbed in the cloth. Never rub at a stain. This will only help to push the stain deeper into the fibers or cause it to get bigger with each movement. You want to pat the stain until no more of it can be lifted by the cloth.

If you have a spill you can erase the red wine from carpet by chasing the spill with white wine. Simply fill a glass of white wine and empty it directly onto the stain. A glass of white wine will make the red wine to disappear from your carpets completely.

When white wine is no available, you can make a solution of water and dish soap and place it in a spray bottle. Spray a small amount onto the red wine stain but make sure that you do not soak the area of the spill. You just want to release enough of the soapy mixture to get the stain removed. Using a new clean towel, gently daub at the spill until you have completely deleted the stain.

Another great solution that you can make at home is a mixture of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. Apply this new mix to the stains carpet. Use only a small mixture of this solution because it will begin to lose its power to clean very quickly.

You will need to make another batch if you should have a stain at a later time. You can find a lot of red wine stain removing instructions online but you will want to be careful when using them. Many of these tips have no proof that they actually work and you could end up destroying the very carpet or sofa that you were trying to save.

Before vacuuming the rug, make sure that the carpet is completely dry. If a stain is still in the carpet, running the vacuum over the area may cause it to spread.

Besides the home remedies, you can find many stain removing products on the market. You can find specific products that will clean and remove any spill including red wine. These cleaners can clean you carpets and sofa but you should only buy and use them if the home remedies fail to get the job done. Many of these products are high in toxicity so you will want to avoid them for as long as you can. This is especially true for homes that have kids or pets in the residence.

Joining A Wine Club

By David Cowley

If you’re a wine lover and wish that you had more time to really shop around for just the right bottle or to find a new one that you’ve never tried before, you may want to seriously consider joining a wine club. Just like “book of the month” or other such clubs, wine clubs are organizations that research, select, and ship off to their members a new bottle or selection of wines once every month or so.

Wine clubs may sound like they’re best for the rich and snooty, but one of the great benefits of it them is that you don’t need to do the painstaking research about each bottle or vintage before you purchase it. The organizers of the wine club are no doubt true wine lovers themselves, and appreciate doing the legwork when it comes to reading up about different vineyards, years, and so on before selecting just the right wines for their members.

These are also great options for those who are just starting out in their love affair with wines, and may not know how to get started with selection, what makes a good vintage, and so on. Shipments of the selections that arrive from your wine club are usually going to have an information sheet included on why it was chosen, what makes it a superior bottle of wine, and so on. A novice can read through the information before sampling the wine so that he or she can really know what to look for when it comes to taste. This will also help familiarize someone with the many different terms that are used in connection with wine, so that he or she can better read a restaurant menu and make a selection.

If considering joining a wine club, there are a few things to keep in mind. Find one that doesn’t tie you into a long-term contract. Many wine clubs operate by letting you choose how many months you’d like to continue for, and allow you to discontinue at any time without penalty or cost. You typically just get billed for the wines as they arrive, or one at a time beforehand.

A really good wine club should also give you some varieties and options as to the types of wines you’re interested in. For example, suppose you’re partial to just red wine or white wine, or want to have only imported German or Italian wine, or just wine from Napa Valley. Many wine clubs even have champagne clubs if you prefer the bubbly stuff!

There’s no limit as to the cost of good wines, however, an average wine club will usually start at around $30 per month and go as high as $100 for wine, or higher depending on the selections.

Be sure that you understand all the “fine print” beforehand so that you don’t meet up with any unexpected charges. Most members of wine clubs report being very happy with their club and many have found them to be a great way to learn about wine and sample some of the best every single month.

Enjoy A Day Of Wine Tasting

By Triston Huntsmin

My wife and I and our close friends recently discovered wine tasting. We had never thought to spend a day touring the many vineyards that surround our home town. Recently, however, when some friends came in from out of town and suggested that they might like to go wine tasting we made the arrangements and set off for a day of unknown adventure.

I enjoy an occasional glass of wine, but I had no idea how fun it would be to tour vineyards and get to taste a variety of wines. I quickly realized during our day of wine tasting that my preferences in wine had been set only out of my ignorance. I found that the more varieties of wine I sampled, the more refined my taste became and the more particular I became about what I wanted in future wines. I had no idea one could become picky because of wine tasting, but I definitely did. In fact, each of the six of us that went wine tasting that day came out with new favorites and new least favorites.

One of the things I liked most about going wine tasting was what a unique and enjoyable way it was to spend an afternoon. Typically we spend time with our friends boating or shopping in quaint shops. Taking them wine tasting felt like a refreshing change of pace. I’d encourage anyone that lives near a vineyard or two to plan a visit with some of their friends or family. Wine tasting truly was an experience that I will never forget and that I doubt will be matched as my wife and I try to host guests in the future.

Another great thing about wine tasting is that it is completely relaxing. One of the things I hate most about being entertained or about entertaining others is the level of stress that seems to inevitably follow. There is nothing worse than running around trying to prepare your house, prepare great food, and come up with great activities as well. Going wine tasting allowed my wife and I to be completely stress free and just enjoy time and good conversation with our friends.

Each of the vineyards we visited on our wine tasting tour was absolutely beautiful. We walked away from each vineyard with new knowledge about wine, about vineyards, and about the lovely area we call home. It was so fun to be able to learn new things as we enjoyed a leisurely afternoon.

If you’re looking for a great and relaxing way to spend an afternoon with friends or family, look no further than to a wine tasting tour at vineyards near you.
