Your Questions About Special Wine Glasses

George asks…
Bought my sis 2 special wine glasses. Would like to carry home for xmas in my luggage but how to pack?
These are hand-painted his and her personalized stemware (25 bucks ea!). Should I try to put them in suitcase when I fly home for Christmas, or am I better off trying to send them through the mail? I’ve seen wine class travel cases for sale on line, but they’re running $60 on up, more than I wanted to spend . . .

Brian answers:
If it were me, I’d either mail them or ship them via UPS or FedEx. You don’t want to put them in your checked luggage – they could easily get broken or stolen. You could carry them on, of course, but don’t gift-wrap them – the package would need to be opened at security.

Betty asks…
Special wine glasses to enhance taste/aroma?
My aunt received some wine glasses as a gift, and they have a particular shape that is supposed to enhance the taste and the smell of the wine. I guess the difference is phenomenal, and I would like to possibly purchase some of these. Does anyone know what the name of this type of wine glass is, and also where I might be able to get some at a reasonable price?

Brian answers:
You want an over sized wineglass, basically softball size and shape… This allows you to easily swirl the wine and release the aromas, the round shape also holds the scent in much longer where as a glass with straight walls allows all this to escape.

Chris asks…
Why is there special glasses for wine?
I’m drinking white wine, but my glass gets empty too quick. Can I use a beer stein, or will that do something to my wine?
OMG Johnny’s Mommy that is freakin hilarious.

Brian answers:
I keep these in handy for special drinking occasions.
I wonder if this is why the guys flock to me at the bar!!!

Sharon asks…
are special wine glasses better?

Brian answers:
Wine glasses are shaped specifically for the type of wine to be tasted. The Bordeaux style wines are served in a glass with a large bowl but is extended at the top. Burgundy style wines are served in a large bowl style glass that is more oval at the sides. These glasses trap the aroma of the wine, show the viscosity or legs as they run down the sides and allow more air to get to the wine due to the size and shape of the glass.
White wines are served in a glass similar to the bordeaux style glass but it is smaller and the bowl is not as large. Champagne is served in a taller flute style glass to allow the “bubbles” to be observed as they travel from the bottom of the glass to the top. Ports and sherries in small flutes.
Does any of this have any meaning. Sure, but enjoy wine the way you want to. Some wines deserve the full treatment, but can you imagine the number of glasses a restaurant has to carry to be “wine politically correct?”

Lizzie asks…
Is there a reason why there are special glasses for Champagne, wine etc.?
Why cant they just drink it out of normal glasses?

Brian answers:
It is all about the bubbles.
The champagne flute is a stem glass with a tall, narrow bowl. As with other stemware, the stem allows the drinker to hold the glass without affecting the temperature of the drink. The bowl is designed to retain champagne’s signature carbonation, by reducing the surface area at the opening of the bowl. The flute has largely replaced the champagne coupe or saucer, the shape of which allowed carbonation to dissipate even more rapidly than from a standard wine glass. Its smaller diameter also allows more flutes to be carried on a tray.
Nucleation in a champagne glass helps form the bubbles seen in champagne. Too much nucleation will cause the carbonation to quickly fizzle out. A smoother surface area will produce fewer bubbles in the glass, and more bubble texture in the taster’s mouth.
While most commonly used for sparkling wines, flutes are also used for certain beers, especially Belgian lambic and gueuze, which are brewed with wild yeast and often fruited. The tart flavour of these beers, coupled with their carbonation, makes them similar to sparkling white wines, and the champagne flute an ideal choice of glassware.

Charles asks…
How do people make polka dot wine glasses and baby bottles?
Are they using special stickers if so what kind?

Brian answers:
There are several different kinds of glass paint which can be used to make the wine glasses. You’ll probably want to use Pebeo Vitrea or Delta brand. The Pebeo gives a more stained glass look while the Delta is more opaque. Try Hobby-Lobby or Michael’s or w/e you have in your area. A google search for glass paint should give you many places from which to order. Paint as desired, bake the glass according to instructions and it should stand up to most washing, dishwashers, etc.

Ruth asks…
Breastfeeding question – If I had 2 glasses of wine, how long should I throw out milk for?
I pump exclusively, & have tons of milk stored in freezer, so I have plenty for baby without the need to use formula. I’m just wondering how many hours or days do I need to throw out milk for if I had 2 glasses of wine? (Special occassion) I read on a well-known baby website that an occassional drink is “okay” while nursing as long as you wait a certain amount of time before letting the baby have the milk again (give it time to clear out your system!) but I can’t remember how many hours it said, & I’m having a hard time locating the article. Any help is appreciated. If your answer is not helpful, please do not respond – I don’t need rude comments!

Brian answers:
Id pump & dump one time… After that things should be fine.
Usually they (lactation consultants) will tell you to wait anywhere from 2-4hrs after a drink to nurse. So depending on how often you pump, one session might be all you need to dump.
Best Wishes.

Lisa asks…
What is the name of the wider mouthed champagne glass, is this just a wine glass?
It’s my birthday Friday and I want to play champagne pong, I think the flutes would be too small to get a ping pong ball in so I want to use a wider Champagne glass. Is this just a wine glass? Is there a special name if not? Also do you know where I could find 12 of these glasses rather cheaply as I just want them for a few games of pong?

Brian answers:
You can get plastic ones at most any party store, complete with the stem and wide flat bottom.
Take a look.
You can probably even get different colored ones.
If you have your heart set on glass ones, take a look at second hand stores. They have TONS of fancy glassware, some stuff still the the box that was donated.

Mary asks…
Is it okay for residents who live in a Nursing home in Toronto, to drink 2 glasses of wine and or 2 beers?
I am talking about for resident in a Nurisng home to drink during special recreational activities such as: Wine and Cheese Party, Dinner of the Month, special social events and so on

Brian answers:
Yes, they may.
It has to be cleared beforehand with their principal doctor.
Once the doctor says what’s allowed and what’s not, it is written on the patient’s chart so that when events come along the staff will know what’s allowed.
